Have you ever thought about feeling an emotion at a specific time?  Do you wake in the morning and think “I am going to feel empathy today”? As a rule, emotions are not digital. We don’t turn them on and off like a light switch. Some emotions come on quickly while others lead our actions like a well-traveled school bus driver. Emotions can settle in for a fortnight like an unwanted relative or flash and burn quickly like a piece of ignited magnesium. Fortunately, emotions can be cultivated. Gratitude, happiness and empathy may not be something we feel every minute […]

REMEMBER, YOU CONTROL YOUR OWN THOUGHTS Strangely, the fact that we control our own thoughts is not something we think about. I’ve heard many people say that they can’t help but focus on the negative. It’s as though someone else is controlling their brain, forcing them to only see one side of things. When was the last time you heard someone say that they couldn’t fall asleep because they could not stop thinking about a stressful event? Why couldn’t they stop? It’s their brain, so couldn’t they just think about something else? Of course, it all sounds very logical but […]

If I say the word drama, what do you think of first?  Twenty years ago, I would have said a type of movie or television show; something fictional. Today, I would say that drama is conflict amongst people.  The definition has changed for me not only with the times but with the advent of social media.  We are never unplugged and need to know what is happening … everywhere and all the time. What is The Drama Triangle? Recently, I learned of a model of social dysfunction known as The Karpman Drama Triangle.  It was created by Stephen Karpman, MD […]

The beginning of a New Year brings a new word for me.  My word for 2016 was GRACE and my new word for 2017 is ENVISION.   I am, of course, assuming that you know what I mean by a year’s word. What is a Word? In a nutshell, this one word is my resolution for the coming year.  It is the word that encompasses all I would like to be for the next 365 days.  I first heard of this movement a couple of years ago from my dear friend Mike Mandel.  Mike is a heavy hitter in the self-improvement […]

I don’t say Thank You enough for everything in my life.  I usually remember to do so when I am driving.  I also seem to remember everything I need to do at home when I am driving.  I wish that would happen when I am actually at home. Today, I woke up at my usual time.  My cracked tooth is still sore from a rogue shell in a soft chocolate covered acai/blueberry treat but it will be fixed soon.   It is a good day. I will be taking 20+ lbs of orange and white tabby cat to the veterinarian […]

Play Like a Child

If you want to be more curious, think like a child.  If you want to be more creative, play like a child. But why would we want to be more curious or creative? Obviously, I don’t know about your world but mine is filled with lists, schedules and deadlines.  I organize money, time, and events daily which keeps my left brain working overtime.  Ultimately, this leads to a life in the here and now with planning and reaction being my most frequently used tools.  There are days that end with me being both exhausted and anxious.  Incredibly, the answer is […]
